Kamehameha Butterfly at Kalena Park

This mural is of Kamehameha Butterflies and is painted on the bathrooms at Kalena Park in Līhu‘e. This mural was painted in partnership with Kamāwaelualani and their program Mo‘olelo Murals through the Rise To Work program, to raise awareness of native plants and animals in Hawai‘i. Kamehameha Butterflies are endemic to Hawai‘i. The Kamehameha Butterfly is the state insect and was named in honor of the House of Kamehameha, the royal family that unified the Hawaiian islands in 1810. The Kamehameha Butterfly used to be found across Hawai‘i, but is now endangered and rarely seen. More info on the Kamehameha Butterfly at the Pulelehua Project
